Pilea pups and Spotted Begonia cuttings are among the houseplants growing toward a future neighborhood plant drop. Here’s a closer look at the plants behind the Plant Passports.
Built for sharing
Pilea naturally produces little offsets around the base of the mother plant. I’m letting the pups develop several leaves before separating them so each one has enough stored energy to settle into its own small pot.
The round leaves reach toward the strongest light, so regular rotation helps keep the plant balanced. I’ll share only the pups that have rooted well and are actively growing.
Rooting at the node
These cane begonia cuttings are sitting in water while roots form from the submerged nodes. The silver-dotted fronts are dramatic, but the red leaf undersides may be even better.
Once the roots are established, each cutting can move into an airy potting mix and begin adjusting to life outside the water vase.
